Desert walk in Mojave National Preserve

01/11/2018 Today is already the first of november, which is crazy because it still feels like summer is just a few days back… But still, we got quite a summer feeling yesterday, when we were in the Mojave National Preserve. We came frome Las Vegas (on the Interstate 15) took the exit, where a Mojave National Preserve sign told us to exit and started this excursion with the teutonia peak trail. A nice 2 hour hike, climbing up a small mountain and walking through the most covered desert by mojave trees, which exists. On our way up we are very sure to have heard a rattle snake, but we couldn’t spot it. Apart from that we did not meet anyone. Neither people nor animals.

What a beautiful landscape. Us wandering the desert in heavenly silence. The only thing, that made us a little bit skeptical were the footprints of a mountain lion beside the trail. But luckily we did not meet him 🙂

After we finished the trail we drove on to the visitor center of the preserve to get some information about the dunes we were about to visit. The rangers at the center were very very friendly, showed us a 20 minute film about the preserve and helped us out with lots of hiking cards and information. They seemed really happy to help us.

We also had our lunch there in the sun, before we left for the Kelso Dunes. 7 miles away from the visitor center started a 3 mile unpaved way to the foot of the dune. But accessible for all cars, even busses go there. Luckily we arrived just in time, so we could start the climb before all the tourists from one of these busses started their tour. We walked about an hour to reach the peak, which was extremely exhausting. We arrived at the top at least with a pulse of 180 and a wet shirt 🙂

And at the top, we really had a lot of fun! And wow the view was amazing. Really breathtaking (well yes also the way up was very breathtaking, I have to admit). We were there at around 4 p.m., when the sunlight already got special, so we took pictures jumping over the edge and walking along the sand edge. I could have stayed there for a lot longer than we did, but we had to return to the car, so we could get back to Los Angeles in time.

Again this day was a very special day with a lot of new and exciting impressions I would not want to miss! The Kelso Dunes in the Mojave National Preserve, a must if you are around! We all were very positivly surprised by this park, as this trip was only planned as a short brake from our way from Las Vegas to LA. A nice surprise!

Thanks for reading guys, leave me a message about your experiences and thoughts 😉
Keep travelling!
